Living Faithfully When You Feel Out Of Place

There are seasons in life when we feel like we don’t quite belong. Sometimes that feeling is social. Other times it is spiritual. You look at the culture around you, and living faithfully to Jesus feels increasingly out of step with the world.

Many Christians know that feeling today. Values like humility, forgiveness, generosity, truth, and sexual integrity are often dismissed or misunderstood. For some, living with faith can feel like they no longer fit in this world.

When that pressure builds, we tend to respond in predictable ways. Some try to blend in; softening convictions or staying silent. Others withdraw; becoming cynical or isolated. Still others try to seize control through power rather than witness.

But the apostle Peter offers another way. Writing to believers who felt scattered and out of place, Peter begins not with strategy, but identity: “To God’s elect, exiles scattered… who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ…” (1 Peter 1:1–2, NIV).

Before Peter tells them how to live, he reminds them who they are. Chosen by God. Peter calls them “God’s elect.” He uses the word as comfort. These believers likely felt weak and forgotten. Peter reminds them they are chosen. They belong to God. Their identity is not determined by culture, but by the God who claims them. When the world says you don’t matter, God says you are chosen. When insecurity says you have no place, God says you belong to Him.

    Exiles in the World

Peter also calls them “exiles.” They lived in earthly communities, but their deepest citizenship was elsewhere. They were residents on earth, but citizens of heaven. That means discomfort is not always a sign that something is wrong. Sometimes it is a sign that you remember where home truly is.

Christians are called to love their neighbors and serve their communities, but we should not expect full cultural comfort in a world that does not share our allegiance. Faithfulness often feels like exile. Formed by the Spirit, Sent by God.

Peter points to the Trinity: chosen by the Father, sanctified by the Spirit, called to obey the Son. God is not only forgiving His people; He is forming them. The Spirit is shaping our character and making us more like Christ. And Peter’s word “scattered” carries hope. God often scatters His people for mission. Your workplace may be your mission field. Your neighborhood may be your assignment. Your current season may be the place God intends to use you.

    Live With Confidence

Stop trying to fully fit in. Anchor your identity in God, not culture. Embrace transformation, not just forgiveness. Live on mission where you are. If you belong to God, then even in exile, you are never out of place.
